Filing tips

Short habits that keep the packet accurate. Confirm current-year rules on IRS.gov — this is education, not advice.

Upload every form you received

A missed 1099-NEC or 1099-INT is one of the most common IRS mismatch letters. If it showed up in the mail or your online account, upload it. Same for every W-2 — two jobs means two W-2s. If you upload the same W-2 twice, we only count it once.

Label the document type

Mark files as W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-INT, Form 8949, and so on. That is how we decide which schedule to attach. PDFs are limited by plan (8 / 16 / 32) and receipt photos (5 / 15 / 30). You can drop a zip up to 128 MB — we unpack it. If it is over the plan, uncheck files or continue on a higher plan. Each PDF or photo must be under 8 MB.

Schedules attach only when numbers exist

Selecting “crypto” or “freelance” does not force a blank form. We add Schedule C, 8949, and the rest only when your uploads have figures.

Do not upload the same gain twice

You can upload several Form 8949s from different places (Coinbase, crypto.com, a broker). Those all add up. Skip a year-end CSV from the same exchange as an 8949 you already uploaded — we would ignore that duplicate anyway.

Standard deduction vs Schedule A

Most people take the standard deduction. We add Schedule A only if mortgage (Form 1098), property tax, charity, and medical in your files beat that amount. Two lenders both count; the same 1098 twice counts once. Business receipts go on Schedule C, not Schedule A. We copy those figures — we do not verify a 1098 with your lender.

We prepare — you file

AutoFileTax does not e-file with the IRS. Download the packet, then print and mail it, import it elsewhere, or take it to a CPA.

Typical federal deadline

Individual returns are usually due April 15 (the next business day if that falls on a weekend or holiday). Confirm the date for your tax year on IRS.gov.

Keep copies

Keep the packet and original documents at least three years. The IRS can ask for them later.

SSN stays on the PDF

The IRS requires your Social Security number on the forms. We stamp it on the PDF, then drop it from stored data and from the AI. PayPal never sees it.

Freelance estimated tax

If you have 1099 income and little withholding, you may owe during the year, not only at filing. A CPA can tell you whether quarterly estimates apply.

This is not tax advice

Guides here explain what our packet contains. They are not a recommendation for your situation. A licensed CPA or the IRS publications are the authority.
